Last month Vineyards Community not only celebrated their 30th Anniversary but the designation of a Blue Zones recognized Community.
What does that mean? Well it adds to their current “America’s Healthiest Clubs” designation so it’s a great add on to our mantra of living longer, living healthier.
Blue Zones Project is a community-wide well-being improvement initiative to help make healthy choices easier for everyone in Southwest Florida. This encompasses lowering obesity rates, smoking, and chronic disease to create a healthier, happier place to live, work, and play. There are many types of organizations that can get Blue Zones approved with their own set of guidelines. At Vineyards, we are designated not only as a Blue Zones Community, but our Dining Room had to meet a separate set of guidelines.
The inspiration and global movement of Blue Zones has helped thousands of people all over the world lead more actives lives and lower the rates of chronic disease. There is a True Vitality Test you can take to calculate your life expectancy and gives you a personalized recommendation for getting the most out of your life. TAKE IT HERE
Community Policy: Community policy has a big impact on healthy choices. Sidewalks, bike lanes, community gardens, mobile food markets, farmers’ markets, and other community infrastructures affect our ability to move naturally, connect socially, and access healthy food. When we make permanent changes to our surroundings, we can change behaviors and help our whole community lead healthier, happier, and longer lives. Many of the members took the personal pledge to make healthier choices.
Dining Policy: Southwest Florida has plenty of choices when it comes to eating out. And Blue Zones Project can help restaurants offer even more healthy choices to keep and attract more customers. By surrounding ourselves with like-minded people who are focused on healthier living, we can move from dieting fads to meaningful lifestyle changes and drive more traffic to the restaurants that are offering delicious, good-for-you menu options.
Participation of living a Blue Zones lifestyle has a four-item checklist that they ask you to learn one of the activities they suggest. Vineyards Wellness Center started up one of these items….it is called a MOAI. A moai (mow-eye) is a special social group that commits to meet for ten weeks to walk, potluck, or discover your purpose together. Moais can help you create new friendships with people who support healthy behaviors.
March 10th was the first Vineyards Country Club Walking Moai Group when they met and completed their first walk together. They will be meeting once per week to walk together as part of Blue Zones Project initiative. Do you want to join in or form your own Walking Moai Group?
